GOD’S PROVISION FOR HIS SERVANTS
God provided for Elijah by meeting his needs, protecting his life and speaking to him in a gentle whisper. Although Elijah was running for his life and lacked the basic provisions required to survive, God provided for his messenger. In a similar way, when Jesus sent out his new messengers, the disciples, to declare and demonstrate the good news message, he ensured that they had the necessary resources. Jesus instructed them not to worry about carrying sufficient provision for their journey. They were not to take a staff, a bag, bread, money or even a change of clothes (Lk 9:1 – 6). God would provide for these needs as he had for the nation of Israel in the wilderness and for messengers like Elijah. They only needed to trust him.
Christians today can live with the same bold confidence in the care of God, who promises to go with them as they go to make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19 – 20). Though they may face suffering, encounter harm or even be put to death, God’s children can trust that he will allow them to accomplish the mission he has placed before them and will forever meet their needs according to the glorious riches of his grace toward them in Christ Jesus (Php 4:19).
Jesus, as I go out today on a mission for you, I can go with confidence that you will equip and enable me to do what you want done. Thank you for including me in your plans. Amen.
