Through the Bible: Philemon

DAY 1 OF 3

Encourage Others

For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you. Philemon 1:7 (ESV)

Philemon was a leader in the church in Colossae. The church met in his house because of persecution at that time. Paul wrote a letter urging Philemon to forgive his slave, Onesimus, and welcome him back as a brother in Christ. Paul knew it was possible since Philemon was an encourager of people.

Paul recognized Philemon as an encourager of people because Philemon was able to revive and restore his brothers and sisters in the faith through his love and generosity. Philemon also encouraged Paul with his love and loyalty.

Are you a refreshing influence and encouragement to others?

We should strive through love to be an encouragement to those around us. Our mission in life should be to encourage those who are discouraged and down.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we can never fully know the struggles and pain people are facing but what we can do is refresh their hearts. We ask that You help us to seek ways where we can replenish their spirit with encouragement and love. Help us to be a “Philemon” in our church and community. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Day 2

About this Plan

Through the Bible: Philemon

A slave named Onesimus escaped from his owner, Philemon, and met the Apostle Paul in his Roman prison, who then led him to Christ. After learning about Onesimus’ wrongdoing against his master, Paul wrote this letter to plead with Philemon to forgive Onesimus. Reconciliation with people who have wronged us is difficult sometimes. May this letter encourage us to let go of our bitterness and renew our relationship with them.
