Birdies, Bogeys & Life Lessons from the Game of Golf

DAY 4 OF 7

Paralysis by Analysis

Golfers are notorious for examining every aspect of their swing in an effort to create the perfect repeating swing for consistency and peak performance. Unfortunately, too much focus on this effort can lead to paralysis by analysis.

Today, we live in a technology age that gives us tools like the Trackman Golf System, a device that allows us to examine swing speeds, spin rates, trajectory, ball speed, and dozens of other stats. We see professional golfers carry this device to the driving range and examine every aspect of their game. These stats can influence how we approach the game and force us to evaluate how we are playing the game.

Unfortunately, the minute you begin focusing on technique instead of visualizing the shot you want to play is when you start hitting poor shots, and you tighten up. Once you focus on technique, you lose your ability to allow yourself to flow in the rhythm of your swing.

Recently I was coaching a Christian leader. He shared with me that he did not believe God spoke to him. I immediately challenged his belief because God has told us in his Word that his sheep hear his voice. I told him that God had spoken to him plenty of times, but he did not recognize it as God’s voice. I asked him to consider different times in his life when he had to make decisions. God speaks to us when we bring our decisions to prayer. I explained that not everyone hears the same way.

Oswald Chambers uses Scripture to explain this mystery of hearing God. “Him shall He teach in the way He chooses” (Psalm 25:12 NKJV).

Listening to God

The Bible is clear about God speaking to his sons and daughters, yet so many followers of Christ say they struggle to hear God. Many people don’t know how God speaks to them specifically. For most, it will be through that still voice inside; for others, it will be in reading the Bible, journaling, or praying. Jesus used the analogy of sheep hearing the voice of the shepherd. They know the shepherd’s voice. As believers, we must learn how we each hear His voice and respond accordingly. He desires to speak to you and guide you. He wants to know you personally.
