When we read the Bible, we mustn’t read it like a history book. These are not stories of what Jesus did one time. They’re stories of who Jesus is. They show us the character of the God we love and serve. With that in mind, look at this story even closer. Ask yourself what this story tells us about the character of Jesus.

The first thing to notice is that Jesus told them to get in the boat and go to the other side. The disciples were doing what God wanted them to do. Often today, when the storms of life come, our first thought is that we must be outside the will of God. This isn’t true. Jesus never promised that we wouldn’t face storms. He tells us in John 16:33, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” Our peace is in the presence of Jesus. Yes, the disciples were in the middle of the storm, but Jesus was in the boat with them!

Interestingly, Jesus was asleep in the middle of the raging storm. The boat is filling with water. The disciples were scared they were all going to die - and Jesus was asleep. How could He sleep at a time like this? Jesus could be at peace and rest because He was one hundred percent confident in the arms of the Father. Oh, that we could learn this lesson! Are you in a storm right now? Do you feel you are rowing against the wind and the waves? Are you frantically working to bail the water out of the boat so you don’t sink? It doesn’t work. No matter how hard you try, we cannot keep the waves from crashing.

How did Jesus calm the storm? The only thing he needed was His Word! One word from Jesus can bring your whole world to peace. Today we can still find peace by turning to the Word of God. Again, it’s not a history book. It’s the very breath and Word of God. That is why we speak Jesus. His Word is power. Speak it over yourself. Speak it over others, every heart and mind. There is peace within His presence.
