More Steps for a Forever Mindset

To have a forever mindset, pray for perspective. Prayer lifts you above your temporary circumstance and helps you see what you cannot see. Jesus did not pray for Christians to be taken out of the world but to be protected from the evil one. We are born again for another world, so we need to pray and stay in contact with God to have perspective. Like the psalmist, who prayed to understand how fleeting life is, pray “Lord, show me the end of my life. Let me contemplate my obituary. My name will be on a tombstone someday, so let me live understanding how I want to be remembered. Let me live with eternity in mind.”

Posture yourself as a pilgrim and a stranger. Abraham, the father of the faithful and one of our chief spiritual fathers, was a pilgrim; he was a stranger. He lived in tents, a nomadic life, moving from place to place. He never settled down, but he was not chasing the wind. He was after something; he was pursuing Someone. He was chasing the Presence of the Living God. Therefore, Abraham became the prototype for all who would be saved, so much so that the redeemed were said to be in Abraham’s bosom (Luke 16:22, KJV) because he was after something in eternity. Abraham had the mindset that this world was temporary. Even Canaan was not his permanent home; he was looking for a city whose foundations would never be shaken.

See the invisible. Hebrews says that Moses left Egypt because he saw Him who is invisible. How do you do that? How do you see the invisible? The invisible God wants to be known, so He does things to let you perceive and understand Him. You will never see Rembrandt or Raphael, but if you visit art galleries around the world, you can admire their paintings. Scripture teaches us that nature speaks of God’s glory. There is a Master Artist, a Creator behind it all. By seeing the visible, we understand a little about the invisible. But for us to really understand the invisible God, according to Scripture, we have to see Jesus, who is the image of the invisible God. Jesus came to this world so we could see what God is like.
