DAY 4 OF 5

FEELING SAFE

In 1 Chronicles 21, we consider David's act of counting the number of his people as something normal, but God saw David's action as wickedness. In the previous chapters, David and his army faced many battles and threats from enemies. This situation forced David to calculate how much power he had. He took a census and found that more than a million of his people were capable of fighting and warding off his enemies.

Why did God view David's action as wickedness? That was because the strength of the large army made David feel safe. Don't we often experience the same thing? People will not depend on God anymore when they feel safe and comfortable with their strength. David sinned by relying on the size of his army. Because of this, David had to receive discipline from the Lord because of David's pride.

We often feel safe and comfortable, for example, when we feel that we have enough "wealth". But there are also times when we realize "wealth" is no longer sufficient for us. God sometimes needs to discipline us by destroying the "treasures" we depend on that make us feel safe and comfortable. This way, we are reminded that nothing in this world can give us a sense of security other than Lord Jesus Himself.

Today’s devotional

1. Looking at yourself right now, do you think you are relying on God or relying on your “treasure”?

2. What would you do if God took all your possessions and wealth?

Today’s action

Depend on God in whatever you do!
