Getting to Know the ProphetsSample
Isaiah
Isaiah 66, of which he is the author, is classified as a Major Prophet. Likely a resident of Jerusalem, Isaiah was a prophet to the Southern Kingdom (Judah), circa 739–631 BC. He was married to a prophetess and served during the reign of four kings before reportedly meeting his death at the hands of a fifth, King Manasseh. Similar to his contemporaries, Isaiah gave a message of impending doom and punishment to the wayward Israelites, balanced by a message of great hope in the coming Messiah. Sadly, Israel continued to look for salvation in military and political strength rather than turning to God and obeying His commandments.
Unlike some other prophets, Isaiah prophesied specifically about the Messiah, which roots his harsh messages of Judah’s punishment in great hope for its deliverance. Isaiah 7:14 offers powerful evidence of the sovereignty of God and the divinity of Christ, declaring, "The Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel.” Keep in mind this was spoken approximately 700 years before Christ came to earth, born of a virgin.
1. How does knowing Isaiah prophesied about a virgin birth 700 years before Jesus strengthen your faith?
2. Have you ever had to deliver bad news to people you care about? How did that affect you?
