A Journey of Life and Leadership: A 5-Day Reading Plan by Jeremy NortonSample
Gaining a Team Perspective
In life, we all lead in some capacity. Some of us at home, at work, at church, or somewhere else in our community. How we choose to lead however, can make all the difference. Although Scripture doesn’t directly outline any sport metaphors, there are many Biblical principles that point to attributes associated with great coaches and captains. We should make every effort to implement team perspectives instead of taking on a boss-like leadership.
To be sure, being on a team is hard work. There are occasional losses. I know that I’ve had my fair share. I’ve failed my team more times than I want to admit. Thankfully, great teams have grace for their leader, and help them get back on track. This is because, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.” (Eccl. 4:9-10a).
Regardless of the challenges we face, we should bring in quality people to share the load. And quality doesn’t mean people who always agree with us. Depending on our situation, it may be time to find and submit to a coach. It may be time to rethink some of our boss-like behaviors. It may be time to obtain some key players. It may be time to accept some of our faults and ask forgiveness. It’ll be tough, but it’ll be worth it in the end. It’s time to gain a team perspective.
Are you leading like a coach or a captain? Or have you slipped into a boss-like state? Do you need outside help or accountability? What area of team perspective do you need to address?
Pray: Lord, help me be honest with how I’m leading. Convict me if I’m trying to do it all on my own. Help me understand the value of my team. Help me be humble enough to obtain another captain, or even a coach to hold me accountable. Show me how to implement a team perspective. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
