Anticipating Christmas: A 5-Day Advent Plan

DAY 2 OF 5

The Thrill of Hope

Imagine it’s a dark, silent night and you’re in a field surrounded by sheep. Suddenly, a host of angels appears and proclaims that after 400 years of waiting, the hope of the world has arrived—a baby called Immanuel, “God with us.”

It can be easy to focus on difficult circumstances or experiences, especially after the challenges of the past year. But Advent offers us an opportunity to reflect on God’s promises and fix our eyes on Jesus.

This season serves as a reminder that we have access to the same hope that the shepherds did all those years ago—in the knowledge that the God of the universe bends low to hear our cries and heal our hearts.

No matter how strong or frightening the darkness may seem, we can trust that there is certainty in the promises written in God’s Word. Take a moment to pause and consider God’s faithfulness as we lean into hope this season.

A Prayer for Hope:

God,

As we near Christmas, help me to pause and remember all that You’ve done in my life, my family, and my community.

I praise You because You are the God who saves. I thank You that my hope is in You, not in circumstances or people.

Because I hope in You, I am confident that You will fulfill Your promises. Remind me today of what truly matters. Help me to see how You are working in the middle of my waiting.

Draw me closer to you this Christmas season, and prepare my heart for the fulfillment of Your promises.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

About this Plan

Anticipating Christmas: A 5-Day Advent Plan

So often, the holidays come and go before we have a chance to focus on preparing our hearts for Christmas. Advent is our way of remembering that God came to be with us, is still with us, and will come again. Over the next 5 days, we’ll examine the four Advent themes: hope, peace, love, and joy.
