Soaking in God’s Word

DAY 8 OF 8

Experience the Fulfillment of God’s Promise

By Rev. Kenley Mann

A power line can look plain and boring. But when it is connected to your house and electricity flows, exciting things happen; you can read by a lamp, and you can stay warm through the winter.

The Holy Spirit is the electricity that flows through the power line of the Bible. You could say that the Bible looks plain and boring, and if you choose not to be connected to it, you will not have the light on and see the beauty of Jesus.

You will not have your heart warmed by the Holy Spirit’s fire. When you are in God’s word, you will experience the fulfillment of this promise by God; I will put my Spirit in you and you will live. (Ezekiel 37:14a)

Despair is the scene for Ezekiel 37. Captive Israelites in Babylon concluded that their nation was dead. The Lord pictures this despair by showing Ezekiel a valley full of very dry skeletons and explains that these bones are the whole house of Israel.

But when these dry bones hear the word of the Lord, God pours His Spirit of Life into them. They become alive with trust that God will keep his promise and re-establish them in Israel.

When you feel dead and hopeless, anticipate that when you are in God’s word, His Spirit will breathe the life of the Son into you, and you will be lifted as you are connected to Him who is the Life and the Resurrection.

Prayer: Dear Lord of Life, I confess that there are times when I am self-centered and not centered on You, and those times lead me to feel despair. Cause me to remember that your Spirit of Life will always meet me when I am in your Word. Change me from despair to anticipation for your life to be put into me, and then propel me into your word. Amen.

Day 7

About this Plan

Soaking in God’s Word

Each day is a new opportunity to grow closer to God, and a great place to start is in God’s Word. Spending time with our Bible and understanding God’s Word strengthens our faith in the Christ. We lean on God to always trust and believe in what Jesus has done for us. This 8-day devotion series, shared by The Lutheran Home Association’s chaplains, addresses a different aspect of God’s Word.
