Wisdom From James

DAY 6 OF 13

Uncontrollable Fire

James uses strong metaphors to explain the wickedness of the tongue and its destructive power. A horse that is bridled by a bit in its mouth can be tamed and steered. The rudder on a large ship, though small, can steer the ship (James 3:3–4). Yet the tongue is a flame of fire that ignites; it is uncontrollable.

Over the spring and summer of 2019–2020, Australia experienced horrific bush fires. Many of the fires were left to burn out throughout the thousands of kilometres of rugged bushland, wildlife, livestock, homes, and properties were left charred in its wake. Many parts of the fire front were so uncontrollable that there was nothing the firefighters could do to contain it. In this metaphor of fire that James uses, we can picture the destructive power our tongue can wield. We now have this opportunity to submit to Christ in faith and allow the Holy Spirit to help guide and empower us to live godly lives with our tongue.

Let’s be aware of how and what we say and ask ourselves, ‘Is this wholesome, fruitful and life-giving? Does it honour others?’

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your word. I pray today that I will speak only good things. Help me to be that blessing and display good deeds of faith by the power of my words as I mirror your words. In Jesus’ name, amen.
