Selfless
Has anyone ever told you, “Don’t be selfish”? That’s an adult’s way of saying we should put others' wants, needs, and interests above our own.
This can be pretty challenging, though. From arguments about sharing our toys to bigger discussions around giving our time and money, selfishness seems to affect everyone.
But God calls us to something greater! Something more than just not being selfish — it’s an awareness, a willing spirit, and a desire to put others first.
It’s learning how to be selfless!
Let’s look at the parable of the Good Samaritan as an example. A Jewish man was robbed, beaten, and left to die on the side of the road. A priest and a Levite both had an opportunity to help but choose to be selfish. They walked by the wounded man and ignored him.
But a Samaritan stopped and helped him — a Samaritan is the last person a Jew would have expected help from. Jews looked down on Samaritans and didn’t interact with them.
This story not only shows we should serve others — even people we don’t like — but it also shows selflessness in putting others before our own personal preferences.
The Samaritan could have decided not to help because he was too busy or because he knew the Jewish man might not be kind to him, but he chose to be selfless and help anyway. He even took him to an inn and paid the innkeeper to look after him.
Just like the Samaritan, God wants us to put others’ interests above our own and be selfless!
Ask yourself: How can you put others’ wants and needs above your own? What are some ways you can put love in motion this week (e.g., help your sibling clean their room, pick up your toys, or do the dishes)?
Challenge yourself: God’s love isn’t selfish. Think of ways you can be selfless at home and do it.
Pray: God, thank You for sending Your son Jesus to show us how to be selfless. Help us find ways to serve others this week. In Jesus’ name, amen.
