Rest for the Soul

DAY 2 OF 5

To Rest is to Be Still

Yesterday we learned that rest is just as much for the soul as it is for the body. It is an internal silence. Rest also means to be still. Sometimes our souls can become so loud in its emotions that we can’t hear or remember the Word of God, and so we respond from the place of fear, shame, offense, worry, you name it. These emotions are what I like to call disturbances to the soul.

A disturbance is the interruption of a settled and peaceful condition. Our souls naturally crave to be in a peaceful condition...to be at rest...to be in stillness. So when our outside environment seems to interrupt this inner peace, we will try to fix what’s on the outside rather than still the disturbed place on the inside of us. What is not still within us will eventually move us out of alignment of God’s will for our life.

Let’s take a part of Elijah's story, for example. Elijah was God’s prophet that killed a lot of false prophets to destroy their false religions. King Ahab told his wife, Jezebel, all that Elijah had done. So she threatened to kill Elijah, and Elijah ran. Her threat caused a disturbance of fear in Elijah, and because he did not still the fear, the fear moved him to run. I love that in 1 Kings 19, God spoke to Elijah in a still, small voice and asked him why he was in the place he was. Not the physical place, but this disturbed place in his soul that moved him to run.

Maybe it’s not fear, but weariness or worry that needs to be stilled within your soul. God’s word has the power to still these disturbed places. I challenge you today to be still and allow God to show you where there may be an interruption of peace in your soul. Hear the still, small voice of your Father.
