#7. I Humble Myself Before God In Celebration.
2 Sam. 6:20-23 “When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, ‘How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, disrobing in the sight of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!’ “David said to Michal, ‘It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord's people Israel. I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.’ And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.” (NIV)
Kings have robes, royal garments. David did not go to a corner to change, He disrobed in front of everybody. David disrobed publicly and then wore the ephod. The ephod looks like an apron but unlike the apron, the ephod covers the back. Sometimes a vulgar person, someone that plays the fool, a buffoon, a jester goes ahead of the king in a procession, making a fool of themselves to make everybody laugh. When the Ark of God was being transported, David became the jester, the buffoon; he became the one dancing like a mad man in front of the Ark because he recognized that he was only a king because of God.
David understood that the only security he had as a king lay with God. God alone determines who becomes king; the only person that determines the duration of kingship is God. Where is your focus when you are worshipping - is it the slave girls or the Lord? David says, "I will celebrate before the Lord and become even more undignified". This is where a lot of us struggle, we want to be dignified in our own eyes. However, with true worship, it doesn't matter what people think about you, the only thing that matters is what God thinks about you. You cannot engage in true worship and be focused on your ‘brand’. David says 'I will shred my brand and let God rebrand me'. I would rather become nothing before He who made me something.
Sadly, until the day of her death, Michal did not have any children. I suspect that David pulled away from her. Michal dishonored God and challenged David's worship of Him. David didn't let her hate make him lose his faith. A lot of us allow people's criticism, hate and negativity affect our faith. As we see from the life of David, the heart of true worship focuses on God and God alone.
