Practical Words for Encouraging Your Daughter

DAY 7 OF 7

Day Seven

“I’m so grateful God gave you to me.”

Scripture: Psalm 127:3; Colossians 1:9-12

Honest parents know that God has used their children to grow and mature them, but few children know they’ve been instruments in God’s hands. It’s not uncommon for a child to feel inconsequential and unseen. What a mind-expanding experience it is for a daughter to learn she has had a positive impact on her parents’ personal growth and character development.

But be prepared, because when you tell her this, she is sure to come back at you with a question, seeking more explanation of what you are referring to. It’s a great conversation starter that will take the two of you deeper into your relationship.

As you share this, let your daughter know that this is just one of the reasons she is a gift from God to you. Psalm 127:3 says, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord.” They are a heritage, an inheritance, a good gift from a good heavenly Father.

What an awesome truth to speak into the heart of your daughter: “God literally blessed me by bringing you into my life! You were chosen by God to fill our lives with His goodness!”

Remember that how you think will inform what you communicate to your daughter. Have you, as a parent, taken the time to truly reflect on this Scripture verse? Have you let God’s perspective of your daughter permeate your thinking? Does she know you see her as a gift given to you by a good God who knows how to give good gifts?

As we looked at earlier this week, our culture is great at communicating to your daughter that she is anything but a gift, let alone a blessing of special favor from God. Let her hear you say how deeply grateful you are to God for giving you such an amazing, beautiful blessing. Her life has purpose and meaning from the very beginning. Help her understand how thankful you are that God gave her to you.

Father, thank you for the incredible blessing of my daughter! Help me to receive her every day as a beautiful gift from you. I want to communicate to her through my words, my time, my prayers, and my priorities how much I love who she is and who she is becoming. Amen.
