DAY 12 OF 30

HUNGRY FOR MORE

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30

How many times have we sought peace and quiet, only to consume endless news articles, social media feeds, streaming services, or other distractions? In reality, these distractions can add weight to our worries instead of relieving the pressures we are experiencing.

Jesus lived a life of simplicity and intentionality. When we respond to our hunger pains with Jesus instead of distractions, we find true rest. Here are three choices we can make every day that will lighten our load:

Connection over Distraction - In John 6:35 Jesus says, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” His love is more rewarding and fulfilling than anything we can find on Earth. Instead of filling your time with distractions, choose to connect with Christ. He wants us to deeply connect with Him so He can restore us! (1 Peter 5:6-11)

Sharing over Stifling - When we share life with others, we can share the weight of our burdens with them. Our friends and leaders can help us through adversity, encourage us, and give us wisdom when we are searching for clarity. We shouldn’t withhold our struggles. We are better together! (Proverbs 17:17)

Creating over Consuming - Romans 12:6-8 says, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” We were each uniquely designed with gifts and passions that enable us to create value for others. Instead of scrolling through social media, make a phone call to a friend or send a note. Instead of binge-watching a new show, serve on a team at church, offer to bring lunch to a friend who is having a hard week, or help a non-profit that is making an impact in your community. Helping others helps us too! (Romans 12:6-8)

How will you connect with Jesus, share your life, and create for others today?

PRAYER

Father, thank You for showing me that I can live a full and unburdened life with You. Help me to hunger and thirst for You alone. Please forgive me for the times that I have pursued distraction instead of connecting with You and others. I love You, and I give You my cares and concerns. Help me to share my life and gifts so that You may be glorified! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
