Infinitum 30 Day Challenge - Week Two

DAY 3 OF 7

Hanging On

You’ve guessed it! The second posture of surrender is holding on. Although this may seem contradictory to letting go rest assured that they can coincide. Back to the water skiing imagery. When you’re just about the start you have to hold onto the rope to get you going. As the boat moves forward the rope pulls tight and you start moving. If you’re in the right position this is when you need to keep holding on. You need to have a firm grip as the powerful boat pulls you across the water. Holding on is about listening to what God has asked of you and accepting His invitation with a tight grip despite any turmoil you may experience along the way.  We can hang onto what God has told us, His commands, and His promises.

What we didn’t read yesterday from Matthew 14 was when Peter became afraid and he began to sink. Peter let go of Jesus’ invitation and held onto fear instead. His eyes lost focus on Jesus and his attention was brought to his abilities and strength. When Jesus tells Peter he is of little faith, it’s more of a teaching moment then a rebuke. Jesus is teaching us that this is where faith needs to be applied, this is where we need to hold on. Jesus Himself lets go and holds on. In Gethsemane Jesus asks God to take away this cup (death) but surrenders to God by saying let it be God’s will not His own. When it comes to hanging on Jesus looks to us, he hangs on to you and me. God has you, would you hold onto Him?

To discern when to let go and when to hold on is to ask God to show you let go when whatever you're holding onto keeps you from doing what Jesus commands you.

  • Is there an area in your life that is challenging and stretching you?
  • Is God asking you to hold on in that season despite any discomfort?
