Enjoying Motherhood Part Two

DAY 5 OF 7

Sit. Listen. ENJOY!

by Krystle Porter

Connecting with our children in our busy, fast-paced world can feel impossible sometimes. I have five children ages twelve all the way to down to three, and it feels that way for me often. Most of my moments are spent keeping them alive (shout-out to moms of littles!), taxi-ing them around town, making meals, cleaning the messes, folding laundry, wiping up spills, gathering cups from rooms, begging them to do school work, and telling them to get off their screens! Time to really be intentional and have some relationship-building moments with my kids either feels a bit like a chore (one more thing to add to my list) or it just plain doesn’t happen and I go to bed wishing for more of my kids in that way.

I have learned recently that the best way I can spend a few meaningful minutes with my kids is to simply sit close by them, listen to what they have to say- with no judgment, and enjoy them. That’s it. No elaborate plan, no money spent, and it blesses my heart more than anything. I listen to all sorts of things; my oldest daughter’s Roblox games (online game) and her newest treasure she won, my seven-year-olds tales of times he’s had with his friends, my ten-year-old’s friendship woes….and the list goes on.

I realize that taking even a few minutes every day to sit down, look at my children in their eyes, smile and laugh with them or relate to their stories, is a treasure for them, too. God loves it when we take the time to learn about these kids He has given us, their little personality quirks, and sometimes figuring out the heart behind their attitude they are having. These moments tend to smooth the edges of rocky, normal life and bring some bright rays of joy smack-dab in the middle of the mundane of your days.

Take some time this week to sit, listen, and enjoy your kids. You will not regret it and it will fill your cup, mama!
