FCA Rise Devotional For Competitors

DAY 31 OF 31

Do The Right Thing

READY:

“The one who lives with integrity will be helped, but one who distorts right and wrong will suddenly fall.” – Proverbs 28:18

SET:

There are eight seconds left in the game and we are down by two points. The buzzer has just sounded from our last timeout and we have the final play ready. We throw the ball in and everyone is hustling to their place on the court. The play is working as planned and our best shooter receives the ball for a wide-open three pointer. And then it happens.

Out of nowhere the other team’s big man steps out of the paint and jumps high to deflect the shot. As he does, instead of the ball traveling toward the basket, it is swatted right into my hands and I’m wide open. There is just enough time to pull the trigger for a final shot and I toss the ball at the basket. Just as the buzzer sounds, my desperation shot clears the bottom of the net. The referee signals that the basket is a three pointer and we win the game!

But there is a problem. I look down and realize that my left foot was clearly out of bounds when I took the shot. There was no referee close to me and evidently I’m the only one who noticed. My whole team is celebrating what looks like a BIG win. I realize that telling the truth in this situation could cost my team a trip to the conference championship game. What should I do?

GO:

  1. Our Bible verse today says that the “blameless will be rescued.” What does that mean to you?
  2. Is it harder to tell the truth when it is costly to others? Why or why not?
  3. How do you overcome the temptation of not being honest when you know it will be costly to others and yourself?

WORKOUT:

  • Psalm 51:6
  • Acts 24:16
  • Luke 16:10

OVERTIME:

Father, help me in all of my decisions to do the right thing, even when it is costly to others and myself. Amen.

About this Plan

FCA Rise Devotional For Competitors

Every competitor faces a moment in his or her career when they must rise. Jesus Christ gives strength and courage to carry your faith into your sport and make a difference for Him. It’s time to rise! The FCA Rise Devotional tackles issues that coaches and athletes face during competition and in life. This 31-day plan will also help establish a consistent, daily quiet time with God, and includes extra readings and suggested prayer. We would like to thank the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for providing this plan.
