SoulSister: Renewing Your Soul With the Word of God

DAY 6 OF 10

Commander

Being a commander requires power. To command means to have and exercise direct authority. SoulSister, we have authority, and we are Soul Commanders. But our authority is only given to us through a relationship with the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

We cannot command anything in heaven or on earth without first being given, and then receiving, spiritual authority.

Romans 8:11 tells us, "The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you” (NLT). This power is only received by first receiving Jesus. Jesus grants us access to receive power from God. Once we have received Jesus, we now carry, possess, and live with that mighty power which is the spirit of God. That NOW gives us authority to command things.

In Psalms 103:1, David is commanding his soul to “Praise the Lord.” David is a Soul Commander. He becomes even more specific when he says, “All my inmost being, praise his holy name” (Psalms 103:1 NIV).

"All your inmost being" is the three areas of our soul: our mind, our emotions, and our will. The inmost being of our soul does not naturally turn towards God. Our soul needs to be commanded. Praise is the command and worship is the position where the renewing happens.

David teaches us a huge lesson here. He says in verse two, “Forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases.” What is he doing? He’s thinking on the Lord and reminding himself what the Lord has done.

David received a supernatural revelation given to him. Because of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, we now have the Word of God and the Good News of Jesus at our fingertips. We can pull up an app and be reminded daily of what Jesus has done for us. When we are praising, worshiping, and renewing our mind with the Word of God, we are commanding our soul to praise and worship the Lord.

Think About It

1. Think about a time in your life when you had to command your soul to praise the Lord.

2. Reflect on a memorable moment you have had in worship and how it impacted you.

3. How has worship shifted your perspective?

4. Which of the three areas of your soul—mind, will, and emotions—needs to be commanded the most in this season and why?
