The ‘stringer’ of your character

So far, we’ve looked together at how God has shaped you and me for a divine purpose – and explored how what we do in life is far less important than to whom we belong.

So today, let’s look at character – what God, as our Master Shaper, has made us to be, at the very centre of our being.

Down the centre of a surfboard is something called the ‘stringer’. It’s made from plywood or, nowadays, carbon. These materials are chosen over others because they offer the best balance between strength, flexibility, and weight.

The stringer defines the character of the surfboard. This powerful, flexible, durable core protects the board from the raw rigours of the ocean and the powers of crashing waves. 

Our Master Shaper wants us to have the same kind of inner strength, flexibility, and endurance.

He always starts with our character. We all have things that shape our lives; sometimes expected, sometimes not. But these good or bad life events are redeemed when we give ourselves into the hands of the Master Shaper.

What we see as broken, He reclaims and transforms into inner strength, flexibility, and power. 

Have you ever heard the adage, “Don’t let your skill or gifting take you where your character can’t carry you”? Often, we learn and grow the most in times of hardship, struggle, or difficulty. Character formation may not always be fun, but it certainly sets us up for the long run.

A strong character can multiply your impact as you execute your purpose in the Master Shaper’s kingdom.  

So, today, take some time to quiet your soul and think back to some of the character-forming turning points in your life – the events that have made you who you are today. Invite the Master Shaper into those times and allow Him to repurpose them for great gain.
