The Discovery: Exploring God’s Call On Your Life

DAY 31 OF 35

“The Discipline: Why is personal Bible study important?”

Personal Bible study, studying the Bible on your own, is an essential spiritual discipline for several reasons:

1. Because the rhythm of God is different in each person’s life, there will be times that God has something to say specifically to you in a way that cannot be said through another person. Only by studying the Bible on your own will you be able to search out God’s individualized plan for your life.

2. As an ambassador for Christ, you are to direct others to the truth of God. If you do not have a working knowledge of the truth and are not working toward attaining that knowledge, then you limit your own ability to connect others with God’s truth. As a person called to ministry, much of your task is pointing people to truth. The more you understand Scripture, the more you will be able to help.

3. As you grow and mature spiritually, you will become an increasing threat to the enemy. You will face trials and temptations. Knowing your Bible and knowing how to find the answers to difficult questions in the Bible even when no one is available to help you will help you defend yourself against the Enemy.

Maybe the thought of studying your Bible is intimidating to you. Maybe studying in general is not your thing. That’s okay. God can create in you the desire to study His Word. As a matter of fact, He can teach you to love it. All you have to do is ask.

Don’t know how to study the Bible on your own without the aid of a devotional guide? That’s okay. Check out Bible study helps online at skopos.org. Link available in plan overview.

Respond to the following in your journal:

From what source do you get most of your Bible knowledge? Does that need to change? Why or why not?

What did you learn through Bible study today?

How were you encouraged? How were you challenged?

About this Plan

The Discovery: Exploring God’s Call On Your Life

Welcome! We are so excited that you want to explore God’s unique plan for your life. Remember, ultimately, the goal of this reading plan is not to figure out what your future job might be, but to hear from God about what it means to be called, so make sure to give it your best effort! Enjoy the journey! Here are just a few tips as you jump in: • Come prepared mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. • Shut out all distractions. • Start with prayer. Keep communication between you and God open and easy by confessing any unconfessed sin, accepting His forgiveness, and asking Him to speak to your heart through Bible study. • Take your time. Read all of the verses listed, listen for God’s voice. You may want to write in a journal as you go so you can track your spiritual progress and remember what God says to you.
