The Discovery: Exploring God’s Call On Your Life

DAY 17 OF 35

“The Minister: What is my personality type and why does it matter?“

Psalm 139:13 tells us that God created our “inmost being.” At first glance, this verse seems to address physical makeup only, but it goes so much deeper than that. Every part of you was designed by God, not just your body.

Your personality is one of God’s good gifts to you, and He intends for you to use it for His purposes just as He intends for you to use your physical strength and spiritual gifts. There are no good or bad personalities. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and each is useful and necessary in the grand scheme of things for carrying out God’s purposes.

Instead of wishing for a different personality or scrutinizing the personality traits of others, we should be focused on overcoming our own inherent weaknesses and maximizing our strengths, bearing with one another in love. We have to work toward unity because we are so different from each other.

You may want to read the Personality Type Synopsis online at skopos.org to see if you can identify your personality traits. This Personality Synopsis is provided to give you an idea of how unique God makes each person.

While it is important to understand your personality and how God wired you, it’s counterproductive to overanalyze your findings, use your personality as an excuse, or to rely on your personality rather than on God. Consider your personality a gift, take encouragement from those with your personality type in the Bible, and ask God to show you what He had in mind when He created you.

Respond to the following in your journal:

How will knowing your personality strengths and weaknesses help you carry out ministry more effectively?

If you read the personality synopsis and list of Biblical examples online, which Biblical person from the list do you most closely resemble? Which personality type fits you most? Are you a combination of two or more personality types?

Go back through and list in your journal the strengths and weaknesses that seem to describe you. How does it feel to know that someone like you is in the Bible and that God is still using their testimony to touch lives thousands of years later?

What is God teaching you? How is He encouraging you? How is He challenging you?

About this Plan

The Discovery: Exploring God’s Call On Your Life

Welcome! We are so excited that you want to explore God’s unique plan for your life. Remember, ultimately, the goal of this reading plan is not to figure out what your future job might be, but to hear from God about what it means to be called, so make sure to give it your best effort! Enjoy the journey! Here are just a few tips as you jump in: • Come prepared mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. • Shut out all distractions. • Start with prayer. Keep communication between you and God open and easy by confessing any unconfessed sin, accepting His forgiveness, and asking Him to speak to your heart through Bible study. • Take your time. Read all of the verses listed, listen for God’s voice. You may want to write in a journal as you go so you can track your spiritual progress and remember what God says to you.
