Living Changed: As a Single MomSample
Purpose
If you’re anything like me, I’m sure you’ve said to yourself: “I’m just a mom.” That’s exactly how I felt when I was suddenly the sole caretaker for three young children. I was an up-and-coming freelance writer looking to further my career when divorce and an economic slump brought it all to a grinding halt. I was passionate about telling people’s stories through writing and felt deep sadness at the thought of that dream being shelved indefinitely. When motherhood became a solo act, it felt like all of my passions got pushed aside.
In the midst of surviving day-to-day and dealing with my pain, it was hard to see that there was purpose in all of it. However, as I invested more time in my church, said yes to serving, and joined a small group of other single moms, I began to see that God had given me gifts for leadership and pastoring. The thought of how many other single moms needed support and encouragement started to weigh on my heart, so I asked God to use me.
First, I had to recognize that there is no such thing as just a mom. Motherhood is a hard and holy calling. Our families are our first ministries, and we have the privilege of raising up kids to know and love God. It may not feel like a calling now. In fact, it might feel like a burden unfairly placed on your shoulders. But God gave your kids to you, and He is really good at finishing what He starts. Surrounded by a loving faith community, and friends, my kids have thrived despite my mistakes and missteps. There is great purpose in this single mom journey.
God has not forgotten you or those dreams and gifts He put inside of you. Whether you are passionate about education, serving, the arts, owning your own business, or finally writing that book, ask God what He wants to do with what you have. If you’re not sure what God has gifted you in, ask Him to reveal it to you. Think about what lights you up, brings you joy, and pulls at your heartstrings. This is your official invitation to discover your purpose!
God, thank you that you created me with unique gifts and a specific purpose in mind. Help me to embrace my calling as a mom and to honor you in it, especially when it’s hard. As you refine and develop me into a fully devoted follower of Christ, give me the courage to discover my purpose and step into it fully. Amen.
