DAY 5 OF 7

Experiencing Authentic Community

Remember Jesus’s last night before His crucifixion? He gave a new command to His followers—that they would love one another radically.

Jesus prayed that His followers would experience the love and unity He had with God the Father (John 13:34; 17:20-24). That love comes from the heart of the giver. It is not dependent upon the merits of the receiver.

Paul echoed this calling in Romans 12:10:

“Be devoted to one another in love.”

In today’s reading, Paul describes an authentic community of believers who love each other sincerely. He tells us to:

·  Honor one another above yourselves.

·  Serve the Lord with zeal.

·  Be joyful in hope.

·  Be patient in affliction.

·  Be faithful in prayer.

·  Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.

·  Practice hospitality.

This kind of true spiritual community may be rare (and becoming even harder to find, these days). But when you make effort to cultivate it, it can be lifechanging.

As we become a part of each other’s lives, we can face life’s most painful trials together while clinging to hope in Christ and His promises. We grow in unity with each other—and with Him.

Are you willing to take steps toward building authentic relationships with other believers to love and serve them sacrificially? God will help. He wants you—with other believers—to reflect His love and fulfill His greatest desires for your life.
