Encouragement and Teaching

DAY 4 OF 21

Elected according to the foreknowledge of the Father

If everything around us is shaken, we need a solid foundation to build our lives on. The apostle Peter mentions such a foundation: our election by our heavenly Father. This is a source of hope and comfort, especially in difficult times.

Peter says that his readers are “elect… according to the foreknowledge of God the Father”. The apostle Paul says something similar: “God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: ‘The Lord knows those who are his’” (2 Timothy 2:19). This “knowledge” implies involvement and unity. God did not just “know what would happen”. He chose us even before the foundation of the world. He had a concrete plan and was actively involved in our salvation. God’s knowledge implies a personal relationship — like “knowing a good friend”.

Our election by God the Father is a firm foundation. Our salvation can’t be damaged by persecution, illness, economic depression, or any other problem that can shake our lives. When you feel overwhelmed or hopeless, remind yourself that God knew you before you were even born, and that He will never leave you.
