A Forgotten Identity

The Hebrews had never experienced freedom. Their true identity as inheritors of Abraham’s promises was long buried and covered over by the label Egypt had given them—“Slave.” They were the carriers of the bloodline of the coming Redeemer and children of the One True King, yet were held captive by fear and doubt and tyranny, for hundreds of years.

But Yahweh had not forgotten his people, or his promises. He allowed them to endure suffering and persecution in Egypt, but only for a time. And not only would he free them from captivity, he would ensure that the Egyptians paid them for hundreds of years of service with their own gold and silver. Yahweh would restore their wealth, their freedom, and their esteem in the eyes of the world.

Although their parents and grandparents endured slavery, it was this generation of Hebrews that saw the glories and wonders of Yahweh with their own eyes. Even though the persecution and burden became heavier under the wrath of Pharaoh, it was this generation of Hebrews that was given the special calling of being witnesses to the downfall of Egypt and this generation who saw the realization of the ancient prophecies given to Abraham.

There will come a day when the people of Yahweh will be revealed to the world. There will come a day when suffering will cease. There will come a day when our identity as royal sons and daughters is made clear to a world that mocks and denigrates us.

This world should not be an easy place for those who are inheritors of the promises of Yahweh. If we are comfortable in these earthly bodies and accepting of the label of “slave” that the Enemy gives us, then we are blind to the truth—that it is a blessing to suffer in the name of Yeshua.

The closer we get toward our final redemption, the closer we move toward the revelation of our Messiah, the closer we come to the hope and promises of Yahweh’s Kingdom, the harder the king of this world, Satan, will try to make us forget who we really are. He will press us down under heavier burdens, he will persecute us, and yes, he will kill some of us. But, he will not prevail.

We must cling to the hope we have in our Messiah. Cling to the promises of eternal life granted only through active belief in our savior’s identity as Yahweh—the Eternal God. Cling to our true identity as sons and daughters of the One True King no matter what the world calls us and no matter what we suffer for his name.

Questions to Consider:

Galatians 4:7 says, "Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God." If you fully embraced this truth what things would change in your life?

In what ways are you being asked to suffer under affliction as you await His final redemption? What hopeful promises can you cling to in the meantime?
