Home Discipleship RestartSample
In the garden, God would walk with His children in the cool of the day in absolute freedom. All Adam and Eve knew was delight in their Heavenly Father, not even knowing that they were, well, naked.
This was more than a physical state, however. This was a state of complete freedom, being completely unashamed. Home discipleship can only work when we create an atmosphere in which our children are free and unashamed.
Adam and Eve walked and talked with God face to face, without worrying if they were good enough or if what they said was silly. God fully knew them- no hiding and not a doubt of His delight in them. This is how it was in the first home. We know how that story turned out and how man and woman went into hiding, but the truth of it still rings true. Our homes are a place where we can be unashamed with the Lord and each other, walking and talking with Him freely.
How do we facilitate this kind of environment when it comes to home discipleship? We, ourselves and our children, must be vulnerable. So many seem to avoid digging into the Bible as a family because we are afraid we do not have all of the answers. We are worried that we are poor teachers. But can I let you in on a little secret? Home discipleship does not require a theology degree. It requires a heart seeking after Him freely and leading the next generation to do the same. It is so beautiful when families dive into the word together, trusting and wading through the messy questions and growing in faith together. Our children need a space where they can ask, work it out, and be guided lovingly always to the heart of the Father.
Why is being vulnerable in our discipleship with our children important? Only by going to God naked and unashamed can we understand being fully known and fully loved. When we know we are fully known and fully loved, we can entirely be all that He has created us to be- free and unashamed. When an environment that allows vulnerability, messy questions, and “seek and find” answers is cultivated, the seeds that God has planted in the hearts of our children can grow.
Our home is that haven, that beautiful garden, where our children can be free to learn, free to grow, and free to be released into a world that so desperately needs to understand that in Jesus, they are fully known and fully loved.
