Forty Days Without Fear

DAY 19 OF 40

OVERCOMING FEAR OF SILENCE

Today our challenge is to embrace silence! We live lives at 100mph, rushing from one event to another, completing tasks, making calls, joining Zoom calls, catching up with friends. We are a society constantly on the go, and although being industrious is a desirable trait, just as important is the need to be still and silent. People can fear silence and not being distracted, because they feel less acceptable or successful without connection and achievement.

But life can become so busy that we leave no space to re-align with God or our souls; no room to refresh our spirits, and no time to rest in God’s presence. We create so much noise that we no longer hear God whispering to us - to comfort, correct, inspire, challenge, and encourage. As a result, we can find ourselves feeling lost and trying to navigate life without a compass.

Silence can be more powerful than shouting; slowing down more impactful than striving. Being still allows God to move on our behalf, and who wouldn’t want the Creator of the Universe to take the steering wheel once in a while? We will find that He is a better driver than we’ll ever be. Being still could be the most productive activity we do this week.

Action: So, whether it be for five minutes, or more; whether we go for a walk or retreat to our favourite spot, let’s embrace silence today. Create space to hear the whisper of God and write down what He says!
