Friendship With Our Father

DAY 5 OF 7

Day 5: The Heart of a True Friend

On day 1 of this plan I talked about obedience. Today I talk about worship.

Being friends with our Father is achievable. Sometimes we think it's an exclusive privilege for special people who are walking in a certain level of supernatural holiness, and that's not the case. All those the Bible describes as friends of God were imperfect people like you and me. This was the case of King David, a man after our Father’s own heart (Acts 13:22). He made mistakes, yet he had a strong friendship with God—to such an extent that Jesus was known as a Son of God and son of David, even though David existed about five hundred years before Jesus. What was the foundation of this solid friendship? Worship.

The Bible says the Father seeks true worshippers who worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:23–24), and one of David's most noteworthy characteristics is that he was a genuine and passionate worshipper. The heart of a true friend of God is the heart of a worshipper. David managed to develop a close friendship with God through worship. He always put worship of God before anything, including people's opinions, as was the case with his wife Michal, who criticized the way David worshipped God.

Worship is like a Wi-Fi connection. When we worship our Father in spirit and truth, we connect with His Wi-Fi. The Father is constantly searching for worshippers in spirit and truth, and when we worship Him in this way, we automatically connect with Him. That is why David wrote the following:

  • “God, you are the Holy One. You sit as King upon the praises of Israel.” (Psalm 22:3 ERV)

David became a man after God's own heart because he learned to know God's heart. In a friendship, it is always important to know the tastes and interests of the other party. Sometimes we approach God by presenting Him with our plans, requests, or complaints, and that's fine, but if we want to be friends with God, we must focus on knowing Him more and knowing His likes. Worship and obedience are two things that touch the Father's heart. It was God who said David was a man after His own heart because David knew how to worship and did what God commanded him to do (1 Samuel 13:14).

Being friends of our Father requires us to know Him and know the things in which He delights. If you want to be friends with God, you must be a passionate worshipper in spirit and truth. As Jesus said:

  • “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24 ASV)

Meditation

“I will bless Jehovah at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” (Psalms 34:1 ASV)

Prayer

Spirit of God, create in me a heart after God’s own heart. I want to be a worshipper who worships the Father in spirit and truth.

About this Plan

Friendship With Our Father

The Bible shows us that there are different levels of relationship we can have with our Father. There are many servants, but few are friends of God. In this 7-day plan you will learn, through the lives of David and Moses, among others, how to become a friend of God.
