When You Don't Like Your Story - 5 Day Devotional

DAY 5 OF 5

It’s a paradox that the worst chapters can become our greatest victories, but isn’t that the way of Scripture?

Jesus died like a criminal and now rules as a king.

God temporarily blinded Saul physically so that he could see spiritually.

Paul was chained to a guard to learn how to live free.

I die to self in order to live for God.

What I considered the most pitiful parts of my story I now consider the most powerful. . . .

Will you trust God to write your story? Even when you feel he’s surely dropped the pen and walked away, will you trust that he hasn’t? Even when you feel that he’s made a mistake in the writing, will you trust that his plan is still intact? Even when the story seems anything but good, will you trust that he is good? A good ending is more than the resolution to a conflict. A good ending is one of redemption. When it comes to the worst chapters of your past, whether it was your fault, or you had no choice in its unfolding, you can’t change it. I can’t change mine either. We can only change what we do with it. We can bury the worst chapters in secret graves of shame, bitterness, and fear, or plant the seeds of what we’ve learned into the hearts and lives of others.

Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny. I believe that for you. I know a name that is greater than your pain. I know a name that is greater than your shame. And that name is Jesus—the author and perfecter of our faith. God rarely writes tidy Hallmark stories that tie everything up with a neat shiny bow in ninety minutes or less. Most of the accounts in the Bible are convoluted and messy. And so are our lives. Each story in his transcendent story has characters, plot twists, tragedy, resolution, redemption, and ultimately a conclusion. In his ultimate story—in which we get to play a part—the end has already been written.
