Trusting God In The Scary

The song "Trust" that we wrote has been a big deal for me. It reminded me of all the big and little moments in life that I’ve needed to trust God. It’s crazy how trusting God and giving Him control has given me freedom to live.

I specifically recall a story from a couple of years ago when my daughter was born. After she was born, my wife and I were just trying to figure out what it was like to be new parents. One night, we were awakened at 3:30 a.m. and our daughter’s heart rate was 180bpm. We didn’t know it at the time but she had a condition called SVT. Her little heart was beating like crazy and we didn’t know why.

We were immediately transported to the NICU. Of course, my wife and I were freaking out! I had to take a moment to say, “God, I need You. I need You here. I need You to show me You’re here.” 

Soon after we arrived, we were placed into a room at the hospital. I couldn’t believe what I saw! We could have been placed in any room in the entire hospital, but we were put in that specific room. On the wall in front of me was a picture of an elephant with a green and blue background with clouds and the words “Dream Big” printed on it. That probably doesn’t mean anything to you, but to me it was the reassurance I needed. Those were the colors my wife and I chose for our wedding and the elephant and words were both things that were painted in my room as a child! “Dream Big” was like God saying, “I’m here with you.”

At that moment, I felt known. I knew I could trust God in the midst of that scary situation. Relinquishing control and fear and giving it to God allowed me to live in a newfound freedom.

My daughter is great now, we actually have our third child on the way! Praise the Lord. 

What in your life feels like an emergency room? Where do you need God to show up and whisper “Dream Big” to you? Take a moment to identify that part of your life and simply pray.

“God, will You show me that You’re here with me?”
