Daily Bible Reading - October 2020: God’s Life-Giving Word of Justice and Peace

DAY 18 OF 31

October 18

Introduction

Today we will begin reading excerpts from the book of the prophet Jeremiah. The prophet Jeremiah lived during the latter part of the seventh century and first part of the sixth century B.C. During his ministry, he warned God’s people of the catastrophe that was to fall upon the nation because of their idolatry and sin. The Assyrian Empire had fallen, giving rise to the Babylonian Empire which resulted in the destruction of Judah and the exile that followed. Today’s reading introduces us to the call of Jeremiah to be a prophet and what he is commissioned to do.

Scripture Reading

Jeremiah 1:1-19

Today’s Key Verse: Jeremiah 1:19b

“I will be with you to protect you. I, the LORD, have spoken.”

Reflect

Reread verses 4-8. How does Jeremiah respond to God’s call? How does God reassure Jeremiah? Jeremiah is shown two visions; the vision of the almond tree branch (verses 11, 12) assures Jeremiah that the mission to which he has been called will be successful. What is the second vision and what is its meaning (verses 13-16)? According to verse 16, what sins have the people committed? What challenges do you envision Jeremiah faced in heeding God’s call?

Pray

Lord God, you call each of us to listen for your voice and to do your will. I need not fear because you are always with me. Guide my words and actions this day so that all I do is pleasing in your sight and gives glory and honor to you. Amen.
