The singing of Praise Is to Be Continual, PRAISE, AND WORSHIP.
The word “praise” here (Hebrew tehillah) refers to a hymn of praise, or the singing spontaneous praise to God (see Ps. 40:3), as with the NT call to sing and make “melody in your heart to the Lord” (Eph. 5:19). When the heart is full of praise, it will find expression — songs and words being spoken, overflowing from our mouths (Matt. 12:34). We are always to sing praise (see Ps. 35:28); and this psalm elaborates the theme verses (1–7) giving this instruction: 1) Sing to prompt others to do the same (vv. 2, 3, 8–14); 2) sing as a transforming remedy for fear, bringing boldness (vv. 4, 5, 15, 16); and 3) sing as an exercise of faith, invoking deliverance (vv. 6, 7, 17–22).
