Scripture: Genesis 12:1–2; Hebrews 11:8-19
Abraham has the biggest reputation of all those mentioned in the Hebrews 11 Hall of Faith. And for good reason! God used him to illustrate the life of faith more than any other man or woman in Scripture. Take a look at Hebrews 11:8–12. Now look back on Abraham’s story in Genesis 12:1–2, where God said to Abraham: “Leave your own country behind you, and your own people, and go to the land I will guide you to. If you do, I will cause you to become the father of a great nation; I will bless you and make your name famous, and you will be a blessing to many others.”
The land I will guide you to.
God didn’t tell Abraham what or where that land was, or how long it would take to get there. He didn’t tell him where or how they would live in that place. He basically said, “Leave everything you have ever known, follow Me, and don’t leave a forwarding address.” Ultimately, Abraham wasn’t choosing to move to another country, he was choosing to follow the God who had spoken to him.
God leads us one step at a time, and that can be a little frustrating for us. Most of us would like to have a detailed blueprint early in life. Lord, I need to know who I will marry. I need to know where I will live, what my profession will be, and how many children I will have. Will I live a long life, or die young?
The Lord probably won’t answer those questions in advance. He doesn’t reveal things to us in one huge download. For one thing, He knows we would never be able to handle it. Beyond that, He wants us to learn to walk with Him and trust Him, one step at a time.
It must have been scary for Abraham and Sarah to follow the voice of a God they had never known and head off with everything they had over the horizon. But as we know, it turned out very, very well for them—better than they could have dreamed. It’s the same with us. As we obey the Lord, doing what He tells us to do and staying away from things He tells us to avoid, we realize that He has our best interests at heart and that He will protect us. In fact, the Bible says, “No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11).
When has God blessed you for obeying Him in faith?

About this Plan
A world changer is simply a person who chooses every day to be available to God. In this week’s devotional, we’ll look at why faith is the key to living that kind of life. As we’ll see in Hebrews 11, world changers make a difference because they have more trust in God than in themselves—and end up in amazing situations they never would have dreamed possible!
