Back-To-School : God’s Got This!

DAY 2 OF 3

In this verse, Jesus tells you to take one day at a time! It just makes sense. We have no way of knowing what tomorrow will bring. Only God knows. When we worry about tomorrow, we are wasting the time we need for the worries we face today!

It’s also important to notice what Jesus did not say. He did not say there is nothing to worry about. Nor was he urging people to live in denial.

Jesus knows we face serious issues that make us worry. People we love get hurt. Doctors give unwanted diagnoses. Pandemics occur. Distance-learning is required. There are real issues in all our lives and they are troubling. Rest assured. Jesus was not saying there is nothing to worry about!

He wanted us to see that taking one day’s worry at a time helps us be less worried and weighed down.

A few years ago I was at a meeting in which the person convening the meeting put this into practice. First, she thanked us for coming. Then she said, “There’s a good chance that everyone here has important things they are worrying about.” (I wondered if she could read my mind because that day I really was weighed down by worry!)

She went on. “We are not here to work on those things. So, take a few minutes and write down what’s weighing on you.” We all did. I had 7 things on my list, all related to the future!

Then she said, "Okay fold it. I will not look at what you wrote, but I want you to hand those to me. I’ll hold them for you until we are done. Then I will give it back."

That exercise was really effective. We accomplished what needed to be done.

Jesus was right. When you separate today’s worries from tomorrow’s worries, your day will be easier to manage. So give it a try. Take two blank sheets and make two headings. Heading One: Today. Heading Two: Tomorrow. Fold the tomorrow list and put it somewhere else—maybe your Bible!

Remember, God’s got this.
