DAY 6 OF 7

Reconciliation > Alienation

Whenever we are under the sway of pride, it is as though blinders are put on us, and we cannot see anyone else’s pain because we are far too consumed by our own. In the Day Five devotional, I shared a story about a gap that needed to be bridged. The crazy thing is, I had seen myself as the victim and the other person as prideful, when actually the roles were reversed.

When I saw her later at the event we both were speaking at, my heart welled up with love for her. We embraced. I attended her session, and she was there for mine. There was a moment during worship when I felt compelled to place my hand on her back, but I hesitated. I looked over and noticed that another friend saw my hand hovering behind her. As if she knew the question lingering in my mind, she nodded her assent . . . do it.

As I laid my hand on her back, the young woman fell into my arms . . . weeping. I don’t remember all that I prayed, except breaking word curses off of her that had been spoken over her by the women who had passed through her life. Something deep and holy happened. Something that would not have ever happened if I had remained trapped in pride and offense.

Later, she wrote:

This Sicilian godmother prayed over me for healing as a daughter of God, areas I didn’t realize I still needed. Weeks later, God burdened me to stop shrinking back from the role of a spiritual mother. God is raising up spiritual mothers for a generation of girls coming behind us, but we can’t step into that role until we are healed in our identity as a daughter.

Find the women ahead of you in life who are interested in legacy, who are holding out a hand and lifting you up. Ones who aren’t guarding their influence but giving it away. They are the front runners, the ones who paved roads of leadership we now walk on freely. Let’s take those same kinds of risks for the generation coming up next.

Let’s be those godmothers and goddaughters. We know that we are all goddaughters because we are all God’s daughters; let’s make the choice to be mothers as well. It’s time for godmothers and goddaughters to model reconciliation.
