More Than a Mommy

DAY 3 OF 4

As much as I love learning from all the incredible mothers highlighted in the Bible, Prophetess Deborah is one of my absolute faves. She was the epitome of a #GirlBoss as she operated as a judge of Israel. For context, judges during Deborah's time were revered as the leaders of the Israelites. People often sought counsel from them and looked to their judgement as guidelines on what moves to make as a nation. In short, the appointment of Deborah, a WOMAN, as a judge during those times is a pretty huge deal. What's also incredibly interesting about Prophetess Deborah is that her genealogy and family ties are rarely ever mentioned when her life is chronicled.

In Biblical studies, Deborah is identified as a wife, a warrior, and a strong ruler. Though she self-identifies as a risen "mother in Israel", there is little to no mention in historical studies that suggests the existence of any biological children born to her. This in itself is so powerful and necessary to our study together! How many times have modern-day mothers battled with guilt and shame due to their longing to be successful, working moms? In addition, how many adoptive and/or non-biological moms suffer from doubt and insecurity in their maternal positioning caused by societal stereotypes that view "non-traditional" families as different or less-than? Deborah was a professional, working woman who thrived in her role as prophetess and judge. She was also potentially a pseudo-mother to the many Israelites who trusted and dependent on her Godly wisdom to govern  their lives.

If you are one of those Mamas suffering from guilt and shame, the buck stops here. God knew exactly what He was doing when He formed you in your mother's womb. You are not "less" than a Mom because you choose to work. You are not "less" than a Mom if you mother children whom you didn't physically birth. In fact, you're more than a Mommy! Motherhood is a facet of your purpose but it does not define you in entirety. Can you imagine the world today without all of the brilliant, game-changing Moms in the workforce? Or without the women who make the CHOICE to open their hearts and homes to littles in need of God's love? I actually can imagine that world, and it's not one I would ever want to live in.

As you read and reflect on today's Word, consider all the ways you show up as mighty, bold, and powerful as Deborah. Who are the women/mothers you are mentoring in order to continue to amplify the powerful voice and impact of mothers in our world?
