Samuel — Prophet and LeaderSample
Samuel Dies
Even before his birth, Samuel was set apart as a servant of the Lord. And indeed, he has served God all of his life. No, he was not perfect, but he was a faithful prophet and leader. He repeatedly urged the Israelites to direct their heart to the Lord, and he coached their first kings to reign according to God’s statutes. His death was a real loss for Israel.
For Samuel himself, dying was not a loss, but only gain. He had lived in the Lord’s temple in his early years, but now it was finally time to “be away from the body and at home with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8, ESV). Like the apostle Paul centuries later, he could conclude: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness” (2 Timothy 4:7-8, ESV).
If you look back on your life up to now, what is your conclusion? Are you spending your life well?
