The Holy Spirit

DAY 3 OF 8

How do we receive the Holy Spirit?

We receive him by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit is something of a mystery—or, maybe we should say, someone of a mystery.

One time, when Jesus was speaking about the Holy Spirit, he said that how people are born of the Spirit is like an invisible, unpredictable, but powerful wind.

In other words, the Holy Spirit can’t be tamed. He can’t be predicted or controlled. He can’t even be fully comprehended. He’s like an invisible, powerful gust of wind.

The Spirit has all the freedom of God himself, because, of course, the Holy Spirit is God, the third Person of the Trinity.

But just because he’s sovereign, just because he’s unpredictable, doesn’t mean he isn’t  trustworthy. He’s God, he is the perfect reflection of God’s nature and character. He loves us, and he wants to come and live with us.

But how do we receive the Holy Spirit?

It’s as simple as this: you hear the message of the Gospel—that Jesus died for your sins and was raised from the dead—and you put your trust in Jesus. If you trust the good news about Jesus, God will send his Holy Spirit to live inside of you. That’s it. He’s the free gift of God to enable you to understand God’s incredible love for you so that you can become more like Jesus.

Spend some time today thinking about what the free gift of God’s Holy Spirit means to you today and in the future.
