DAY 1 OF 5

An Invitation to Find Deeper Peace at Easter Time

As a pastor I spend many hours listening to people. People who are struggling in one way or another with the living of their lives. When I reflect on these conversations, there often seems to be a common theme running through them. Simply put, I would describe it as a search for peace. We begin to wonder where we can find peace of heart and mind—with ourselves, with others and with God.

When I first came across the Serenity Prayer I was immediately taken by its spiritual wisdom, insight and depth. It seemed to convey deep truths in a very simple, accessible and practical way. When I began to use this prayer in my own devotions I found it enormously helpful.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardships as the pathway to peace, taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it, trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will—that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever.

If you don’t presently have a devotional time, you could begin by setting aside a few minutes at the beginning or end of each day. Pray the words of the Serenity Prayer from your heart. Speak directly to God. Say the words with as much thoughtfulness and attentiveness as possible.

If we are going to be peacemakers in a strife-filled and unhappy world, we first have to seek peace within our own hearts and lives. May these meditations in the weeks leading up to Easter guide you in your own quest for deeper peace and serenity.

How would you describe your present level of trust and faith in God?
