DAY 13 OF 50

Excellence is Not Achieved by Chance

... For everyone to whom much is given, of him shall much be required; and of him to whom men entrust much, they will require and demand all the more. Luke 12:48 AMPC

Is there a possibility that when you treat people graciously they will take your kindness for granted? Oh yes. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, not everyone will respond appropriately to 'grace'.

It is, however, critical to understand that grace is not a license for sloppiness in the workplace: “shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?” (Romans 6:1 KJV) Grace does not lower the standard of excellence that you must set for the business and which you must then demand of yourself and all those who work in the company.

The believer must settle it in their mind once and for all that excellence is not achieved by random happenstance, if it is to be achieved at all; it must be by deliberate pursuit. And knowing that He has “called us by and to His own glory and excellence (virtue).” (2 Peter 1:3 AMPC), you must unwaveringly pursue this excellence in all you do in the business.

Two things are important in improving the outcomes for staff performance in a business that is run with the aim to please the Lord. The first is that a very high standard of excellence must be set for the conduct and output of everyone, and secondly, very clear performance measurement frameworks must be deployed for evaluating adherence to the set standards.

It is this principle of periodic performance evaluation that we see in the parable of the talents, where the Lord of those servants returned to settle accounts (Matthew 25:15-19). It is similarly important to set up an objective performance evaluation system.
