 Reprioritise—Our Most Significant Relationships

Can you picture the moment Jesus said “Follow me” to His disciples? Think about the implications of this calling—following implied a commitment of their time and trust. If you want a relationship to grow, you need to make time for it. We only make time for what we care about and consider a top priority. When you do not have time for something or someone you consider a priority, you will make the time—you will reprioritise. 

Simon and Andrew valued their relationship with Jesus so much that they not only dedicated their time to Him, but they also surrendered their careers. God’s eternal plan became their ultimate priority. When they left their boat, which symbolised their only means for survival, they consecrated their career to the service of God’s kingdom. 

As we continue reading the text in Matthew’s gospel, we find Jesus calling two other brothers: James and John, sons of Zebedee. God’s Word tells us that they were in a boat with their father, preparing their nets (Matthew 4:21). Jesus called them, and they immediately left the boat and their father. God’s eternal plan and purpose for our lives requires reprioritising our most significant relationships. 

When you require someone to reprioritise their career and their most significant relationships, you are asking someone to give you their whole heart. You want it all. Jesus wants to have our all because He gave His all for each one of us (1 Timothy 2:6 NLT). 

Another point worth noticing regarding the reprioritisation of our relationships has to do with a wrong assumption we often make. Some of us may assume that in order to reprioritise our relationships, we need to love our family, husband, wife, children, or friends less. Jesus does not ask us to love anybody less; He asks us to love Him more. Jesus becomes our number one priority. From that relationship, all the other relationships will not only continue to be in our lives, but they will also benefit and flourish because of our relationship with Jesus. 

When you love Jesus more than anything or anyone in this world, it actually changes you. This internal change affects the type of businessman or woman you are, the kind of husband or wife you are; it changes how you treat your children and everyone else. When your relationship with Jesus becomes your number one priority in life, your career and relationships will reap a lifetime of blessings, and God’s eternal purpose and plan will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
