The Book of Matthew

DAY 21 OF 49

Don’t begin by traveling to some far-off place to convert unbelievers. And don’t try to be dramatic by tackling some public enemy. Go to the lost, confused people right here in the neighborhood. Tell them that the kingdom is here. Bring health to the sick. Raise the dead. Touch the untouchables. Kick out the demons. You have been treated generously, so live generously.

(Matthew 10: 5-8, The Message)

In this week’s reading, we have two big themes: authority and faith. We see Jesus’ authority and power as he performs miracle after miracle. Then we see Him tell His disciples to have faith in that authority and to offer complete allegiance to Him.

In chapter 8, fear paralyzes the disciples, but Jesus calms the storm. They did not have a grasp on His complete and perfect power at that moment. Instead, they had a worldview that made them panic. In our lives, do we see what life is handing us as a threat, or do we see the power of Jesus to overcome it? Do we believe that Jesus has control and authority in every aspect of our lives?

Jesus turns the tables on the disciples in chapter 10 as he explains how to go out into the world to offer this new life. As they heal the sick and SERVE others, they bring God’s Kingdom to earth. This lifestyle is the big picture. Through Jesus and his authority, God’s Kingdom is finally accessible on earth!

Jesus makes clear this way of living won’t always be easy. However, His power is far greater than any opposition that lies ahead for the disciples. The same is true for us today. When we follow Jesus, He asks that we give him everything. That’s the exchange. We find Jesus and experience His authority. We trust in Him and spend the rest of our lives serving the people around us. We show them glimpses of Heaven through our love day after day.
