[Difference Makers ls] God of the Universe and Little Ol’ Me

DAY 5 OF 7

A Star Lit for Me

Rich Mullins, a Christian singer, had a song called “Sometimes by Step.” The chorus said, “Step by step, You’ll lead me, and I will follow You all of my days.”

Anyway, the song includes a phrase based on Genesis 15:5: “Sometimes I think of Abraham, how one star he saw had been lit for me.” I heard that, and I realized that one of the stars Abraham saw represented me; I am a descendant of Abraham. Not that I am Jewish, but that through Jesus Christ I have been grafted in to Abraham’s family. The Jewish God and the Christian God are the same God.

I was in the countryside about a week after that and I looked up and I picked out a star. It was going to be my star. And every time I saw it, I said, “That’s my star, Lord. You know where I am and You know who I am.” And I would think about God’s greatness and power.

Another time, looking at the sky, I thought, “I want to get married.” I picked out another star that was right next to my star to be my wife's star. I didn’t know who she was or where she was. I did not know her name. But I prayed, “Lord, bring her to me at the right time. Protect her, keep her, let her grow in You.” Now I have the best wife on Earth in Kelly. She is just a blessing upon blessing. We got married, and one night we were looking at the stars. I told her the story of me picking out a star for myself and she thought that was cool. Then I said, “I also picked out that one for you. There are our stars, together, right there.” She gasped and nuzzled my neck. That’s called romance! We all need more romance in marriage.

There we were, looking at the stars, snuggling together on that starry night. We picked out stars for our kids. Now my two kids each have a star. We can look them in the eye and we can say, “God loves you. He knows you by name. We want you to know that you can look up wherever you are on planet Earth and know that you are loved.”

Do I rely on God’s love and share it with others?

About this Plan

[Difference Makers ls] God of the Universe and Little Ol’ Me

Through Isaiah, God gave a message of hope that the people of Judah and Israel would need after their time in exile. Emphasizing God’s greatness, and contrasting it to human frailty, Matte highlights how we should trust God, gain perspective on our troubles, approach leadership, and consider the universe. With a two-tiered look at God’s transcendence and His intimacy, this plan will encourage you in your spiritual growth.
