5 Days Of Understanding The Bible From Always Near

DAY 4 OF 5

Third, meditate on Bible verses that speak to you. When you’ve memorized a portion of Scripture, you can turn it into a portable Bible study wherever you go. Of course, you don’t have to memorize a verse to contemplate it. With your Bible open to Philippians, you can read, ponder, and personalize each verse as you come to it. But some verses are worth learning, for then you can meditate on them day and night.

In Reclaiming the Lost Art of Biblical Meditation, I wrote, “Like water flowing through a fountain or oil through a machine, Scripture should be constantly circulating through our minds so that we become God-conditioned. In the process, we start to look at things as He does, which is the essence of wisdom.”

Joshua 1:8–9 says, “Meditate on [Scripture] day and night. . . Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” In other words, when we ponder the Scriptures day and night, we experience God’s nearness all the time. If someone follows you everywhere, whispering in your ear all day, you’re aware of his presence. When you meditate on Scripture, it’s as though the Holy Spirit is following you, whispering in your ear. He brings verses to mind day and night, often in times of fear or frustration. No practice in life has helped me more than Scripture memory and biblical meditation.
