From an Africa Study Bible Article: Children at Risk 

Roughly half of Africa’s population is children below age eighteen. Many of our children lack basic necessities like food, clothing, shelter, safety, parental support, healthcare, and education. They are “at risk” because of violence, war, abuse, disease, and other obstacles.

In Psalm 68:5, God is called a “Father to the fatherless, defender of widows.” The Bible is clear that those who exploit the poor and the orphans and rob the fatherless children will incur God’s judgment (Isaiah 10:1-2) Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children” (Matthew 19:14). 

Part of genuine religion is to care for children at risk in their distress (James 1:27). Churches should protect children from evil and encourage God’s way of parenting. They should provide homes for orphans, and food, school fees, and medical care for children living in poverty. Churches should help rescue children being trafficked or prostituted. They should assist disabled children and teach them God’s Word.

The church also needs to address the underlying social problems that result in so many children at risk. Typical problems are alcoholism, drug addiction, adultery and sexual promiscuity, incest, war, exploitation of children, and poverty.

Remember, children are a blessing. Viewing children, even those at risk, as a blessing should prompt us to love and care for them. Christians should reject the attitude that children cause too much trouble, and commit themselves to making children’s ministries a priority.

James says caring for widows and orphans is genuine religion. Why do you think he says this? Can you give examples of other things you think are genuine versus fake religion?

Children can be at risk physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually, or educationally. What factors in your community put children at risk?
