We're Still In This: Healthy Truths For Happy Relationships

DAY 7 OF 7

Do As I Have Done To You

What makes a good leader? The answer to that question would largely be based off of one’s personal experience… both good and bad. Leadership is modeled throughout Scripture, but never more beautifully or intimately displayed than in John 13 when Jesus gathers His disciples for supper the night before His death. After they ate, Jesus “got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself. Then He poured the water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to with them with the towel with which He was girded” (John 13:4-5 NASB). One can only imagine what was going on in the disciples’ minds – some shocked, some embarrassed for Jesus to wash the dirtiest parts of them. Nevertheless, Jesus began making His way around the table one at a time, gently washing his disciples’ feet and acting more like a servant than the Son of Man.

Jesus led by example, but more than that, Jesus was saying to His followers, “You, My beloved disciples, are to become My exact counterpart… an extension of Me when I am gone. Do as you have seen Me do.” There was no pride in washing feet. Jesus beautifully modeled humility with authority, seeking first His Father.

Tangible Takeaway:

A heart of humility is revealed and wisdom beams when we open ourselves up for growth both in leadership and in life. How do you lead? How do you serve others? Are you and image bearer of Jesus? Jesus was our example, and we should strive to do as He did to us.
