Finding God In Your Depression

DAY 2 OF 7

Day 2

Depression is often an outgrowth of long-standing, deep-seated emotions such as fear and anxiety. Sleepless days and nights are spent worrying about one thing or another. Maybe you are constantly anxious about how people see you, about whether you’re good enough on the job or in your home, or about what the next day might bring. The sage of the book of Proverbs and the apostle Paul have something to say about this.

Pray

God, I am anxious and fearful about many things. Show me how to relinquish my fears and rise above my anxiety.

Read

The Scriptures tell us to rid ourselves of anxiety to lighten the heart.

Proverbs 12:25; Philippians 4:6-7

Reflect

According to the wise writer of Proverbs, anxiety is weighty. It weighs heavily on our hearts, causing depression. So how do we avoid becoming anxious? The apostle Paul writes to a group of Christians about one sure way. He tells them not to be anxious about anything but pray instead. Then, God will give incomprehensible peace to those who trust him. What do you think about this?

Respond

Imagine yourself free of the anxiety that weighs you down. Draw or paint something that reflects that freedom. Ask God to make this freedom your reality.

About this Plan

Finding God In Your Depression

The Bible may seem an unlikely source to turn to for answers, but there’s no mistaking the face of depression as a psalmist cries out to God in anguish or as Job laments the day of his birth. Amid their pain and suffering, they find hope in God. Their accounts and the encouraging words of others in Scripture can help you navigate the murky waters of depression.
