Don’t Give Up on a Purposeful Life

God desires that all people find their purpose and fulfill it. I once spoke about purpose at a church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A woman came up to me after the service and said, “I’m fifty-six years old, brother. Where were you fifty-six years ago?” I asked, “What do you mean?” She replied, “You’re the first person ever to come into my life and help me understand that I have a reason for living—and I can’t give an account for fifty-six years right now.”

It’s not easy to take a hard look at yourself, but it’s necessary if you’re going to discover your true purpose in life. Sometimes, people begin to feel the way that woman in Baton Rouge did; they’re distressed because they’ve wasted so much time. If this is your situation, don’t be discouraged. One of the wonderful things about God is that He has a way of restoring the years that the locusts have eaten. (See Joel 2:23–26.) When you go to Him, He knows how to make up for the time that you’ve lost.

Yet God would prefer that we follow Him and know our purpose all our lives. That is why the Word of God says very strongly to young people, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth” (Ecclesiastes 12:1 NIV). 

You were born to do something so awesome that only God could get the credit for it. Get busy with the right thing. When other people see you manifesting what God put into you, they will glorify Him. (See Matthew 5:16.)

That’s an exciting way to live! We have only one life, and we have to make that life count if we are going to fulfill our purpose.

Remember, a God-given purpose can be accomplished only through His guidance and strength. “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20 NIV).

Thought: You were born to do something so awesome that only God could get the credit for it.
